Werner Herzog - "Cave of Forgotten Dreams"

26 Nov

Do not miss the most anticipated film soon in theaters!

Herzog's films have always been my favorites by far for his vision and point of view on the subjects he is exploring: a "romantic visionary." There is always some magic and purity in everything that he successfully creates. The fact that he never use storyboards and often likes to improvise large parts of the script is a big part of his magic.

The Cave of Forgotten Dreams, will open in US theaters on April 29.

A 3-D documentary film shot in 2010, documents Herzog’s unprecedented access to the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc cave in the south of France. The stunning, perfectly preserved underworld discovered 15 years ago by speleologist Jean-Marie Chauvet contains the earliest known cave drawings, which radically challenge our notion of prehistoric man, suggesting he was more artistically advanced than we previously imagined. The film is the third in Herzog’s documentary trilogy, comprising the award-winningGrizzly Man and Encounters at the End of the World, and the latest in a career marked by experimental masterpieces such asFitzcarraldo and Bad Lieutenant.

Part of Herzog's interest in the paintings, he says, is the knowledge that tens of thousands of years ago, humans had the instinct to make art in order to represent the world around them.

"It is strange and very significant that all of a sudden, we have the presence of what I would call 'the modern human soul,' " he says. "Neanderthal man actually did not have all of this, and other civilizations did not have it. And earlier human beings did not represent the world in figurative means — paintings and sculptures and so on."

Spring Summer 2012 preview

Showing now during NY Fashion Week, August 23  - October 15 by appointment only.

Inspiration: The Omo Valley.

The Lower Omo Valley is a spectacularly beautiful area with diverse ecosystems including grasslands, volcanic outcrops, and one of the few remaining ‘pristine’ riverine forests in semi-arid Africa which supports a wide variety of wildlife. A prehistoric site near Lake Turkana, the lower valley of the Omo is renowned the world over. The discovery of many fossils there, especially Homo gracilis, has been of fundamental importance in the study of human evolution.

The Omo Valley region of Southern Ethiopia still the home of some ancient tribes. However the future of these tribes lies in the balance. A massive hydro-electric dam, Gibe III, is under construction on the Omo. When completed it will destroy a fragile environment and the livelihoods of the tribes, which are closely linked to the river and its annual flood. For years the tribes of the Lower Omo Valley have suffered from the progressive loss of access to and control of their lands. Two national parks were set up in the 1960s and 1970s where they are excluded from managing the resources. Tourists can go on safari and hunt for game on tribal lands yet the tribal peoples themselves are banned from hunting. This has resulted in increased malnutrition.

"It is a shame we are destroying our natural sources and therefore the lives of these beautiful people".

"From our modest heart we would like to share some of the images that so greatly inspired us. These kids imagination and sense of beauty are truly special. their body paintings and head decorations are amazing. The colors of nature just perfect"

August Inspiration: "let it bleed" by Vally Nomidou

18 Aug

A quiet, introspective technique of self-healing:

The first time I have discovered Vally Nomidou's sculptures I was surprised. they appeared intense, fragile yet strong.

“Let it bleed“, is a series of life-size sculptures, as well as a series of fragments, such as heads or hands, all made of paper. The works depict young women and young girls.  Paper is Nomidou’s dominant material.  The artist respects her material and, although it is cheap and vulnerable, she does not “adulterate” it by using other materials. Moreover, she does not use it as a shell, an encasing to cover a necessary inner structure by providing a fake, idealized skin. Nomidou builds and shapes her works from the inside out solely using paper and paperboard. The internal cardboard frame is built with a vertical and horizontal grid in order to be able to support and render stillness in her sculptures.

"The figures – quiet, silent, their eyes closed are solitary creatures, with an inclination towards the inner, the intimate, the hermetic, where the pain, although intense, remains silent and internalized."

CREATIVE WAYS...

08 May

How would you improve comfort in the city? Get Involved.

The BMW Guggenheim Lab is a mobile laboratory that will travel to nine major cities worldwide over six years. Led by international, interdisciplinary teams of emerging talents in the areas of urbanism, architecture, art, design, science, technology, education, and sustainability, the BMW Guggenheim Lab will address issues of contemporary urban life through programs and public discourse. Its goal is the exploration of new ideas, experimentation, and ultimately the creation of forward-thinking solutions for urban life.

Over the six-year migration of the BMW Guggenheim Lab, there will be three distinct mobile structures and thematic cycles. Each structure will be designed by a different architect, and each will travel to three cities around the globe. The theme of the first two-year cycle of the BMW Guggenheim Lab is Confronting Comfort, exploring notions of individual and collective comfort and the urgent need for environmental and social responsibility. Cycle 1 of the BMW Guggenheim Lab launches in New York City from August 3 to October 16, 2011, before traveling to Berlin and a city in Asia, to be announced later this year. Cycle 1 concludes with an exhibition presented at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2013. Two additional two-year cycles will follow, each with a new mobile structure and theme, concluding in the fall of 2016.

Part urban think tank, part community center and public gathering space, the BMW Guggenheim Lab is conceived to engage public discourse in cities around the world and through the BMW Guggenheim Lab website and online social communities.

The public is invited to attend free programs developed by the BMW Guggenheim Lab (BGL) Team in each BMW Guggenheim Lab location. In addition, the BMW Guggenheim Lab website and social communities will provide opportunities for participants around the world to engage in the ideas and experiments generated by the BGL Team.

Conrad Botes - South African street art

19 Apr

April inspiration. South African artist Conrad Botes.

Conrad Botes considers himself to be a comic artist, and even though he may digress into making paintings on glass, or handsome and brilliant objects of furniture and lights, it is the jagged graphic line, the searingly acid, iconoclastic storyline which cuts to the heart of the sacred cows of Afrikaner culture which inspirate him artistically.

Together with Anton Kannemeyer, he is one of the founders of Bitterkomix, a rude, cutting publication which the two started as students to jolt the establishment and enliven the lives of their gleeful peers, and which they still publish regularly. TheBitterkomix publications, still distributed personally by Botes and Kannemeyer, have grown to be something of a national institution.

As a white male Afrikaner who came of age in the late 1970s and 80s, Botes’ imagination is embedded with the evils of apartheid, its obsession with power and repression, the violence and anarchy of the times and the moralising role of the Dutch Reformed Church.

Botes was born in 1969 in Ladismith in the Western Cape and lives in Cape Town. He has exhibited extensively both locally and internationally. Most recently he and Kannemeyer were included on Africa Comics at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York. Botes won the Absa l’Atelier award in 2004, and recent solo exhibitions have taken place at the Absa Gallery, Johannesburg (2005), and Johannesburg Art Gallery (2004). Group exhibitions include Turbulence at Hangar-7 in Salzburg, Austria (2007); the 9th Havana Biennale, Cuba (2006); New Painting at the KZNSA Gallery, Unisa Art Gallery and Johannesburg Art Gallery (2006); + Positive, the Biennale of Merano, Italy (2004); Africa Screams: The return of evil in African art and cinema at the Afrikazentrum der Universitat Bayreuth, Germany (2004);Passport to South Africa at the Centro Culturale Trevi, Bolzano, Italy (2002) and In Fumo at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Bergamo, Italy (2001).

Loïe Fuller - Goddess of Light.

22 Jan

Our January inspiration is dedicated to Loïe Fuller. A modern woman.

Loïe Fuller (1862-1928) or “La Loïe” as she was known to her public, can be historically positioned at the beginning of a wave of female soloists who established a new theatrical context for dance, and whose work engaged with influential new ideas about the body and movement that were shaping contemporary literature, philosophy and new technologies for reproducing motion.

Fuller’s dancing involved manipulating a circle of silk panels worn from the neck attached to rods which extended her arms to enable a dramatic flow and dance  while having beams of colored light play upon them. She may or may not have been a true mistress of terpsichore, but she certainly taught the light to dance. She was the first dancer to use the then new incandescent lights of Edison fame, a traveling team of lighting and stage engineers, and her own patented dress designs for her tours in the US and France. Fuller held many patents related to stage lighting including chemical compounds for creating color gel and the use of chemical salts for luminescent lighting and garments (stage costumes US Patent 518347). Fuller was also a member of the French Astronomical Society.

She broke the mold of traditional choreography and prepared the way for the development of modern dance. She helped to launch other pioneers, among them Isadora Duncan. She became the personification of Art Nouveau, the inspiration for artists who, idealizing her, portrayed her more often than any other woman of her time. She, in turn, promoted the work of her artist friends and was responsible for the founding of two art museums. An inspiration for poets as well as artists, she served as a symbol of the symbolist movement.

"Before our very eyes she turned to many-coloured shining orchids, to a wavering, flowing sea-flower, and at length to a spiral-like lily, all the magic of Merlin, the sorcery of light, colour, flowing form… She transformed herself into a thousand colourful images before the eyes of her audience. Unbelievable. Not to be repeated or described." - Isadora Duncan

Contemporary dancer Jody Sperling has gained an international reputation as an expert on Loïe Fuller and is the foremost contemporary interpreter of Fuller’s style. In the past decade, Sperling has created more than 25 works, including five solos and four group works that pay homage to Fuller.

"women are heros" by JR

16 Dec

JR is an anonymous graffiti artist. His work is a great inspiration to us both for it's beauty and noble message.

For the past three years, JR have been traveling across Africa, Brazil, India and Cambodia photographing local women. He pasted his portraits super-sized on walls, trains and billboards- anywhere, in fact, where he could get away with these unauthorized displays. JR wants to testify of their force, their courage and their noble struggle: first to live, then to exist.

"Women are heros" allows everyone to feel concerned by their condition and connects, through art, the two different worlds.

The goal is to reach the limits of Art in closed social and cultural environment and watch the reaction of the local population. What is at stake here is the assessment of the possibilities of invention in the different environments. The success of such a process allows drawing a status of women in their countries.

General Trend Installation Images:

Photographer: Pieter Henket

12 Aug

Fall 2010 was an exiting season for us for many different reasons, but in special because were fortunate to work with one of our favorites photographers Pieter Henket.

Pieter Henket is a 31 year old Dutch Photographer based in New York City. His "savior faire" and good taste truly impressed us, we ask him to answer a short "questionner" but with all honesty...his story was more interesting explained by him directly... After having scratched a bit at the surface I have come to discover what Pieter is about... Here it is in his own words....

"My parents met because my mother opened a store as a designer in Holland, my father was her architect. I was bon in 1979 in a old house in the middle of the forest. A house with many spirits, and large rooms, with huge paintings and antique heads of gods angels and lions. The walls and curtains were different colors every year. Our celebrations were grand, everyday breakfast was with long dressed tables,  candles and a view over the lake that carried a mist coming from the water, slowly rising over the fields while the sun tried to break trough the dark wild and angry clouds of Holland. I was not a child of school, I felt School was mass production, a place where they make everyone the same. At weekends my parents would take us to a museum to show us the world of paintings and the history of the great masters.

When I was 19 I moved to New York to take a course at the New York Film Academy.

Two weeks later I met Joel Schumacher filming a movie with Robert Deniro on the streets of the east village and he offered me an internship. I made videos and films, but i kept thinking I can tell much more of a story in one image then in a whole film. So I started photography.

To me an ultimate picture is a picture that tells a story within the person that you shoot. A picture where you can leave everything out, because the essence is in the face that is represented. A perfect picture to me is a cinematic scene where a unique use of lighting demands a viewer to pay attention to a central subject. In the end a picture is your vision of the person meeting your camera. It is a story of two souls meeting. A story told all in one frame."

...and we love you for that Pieter. His work is currently part of the American Woman group exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

His Work has been featured in:

  • Wallpaper Magazine
  • Harpers Bazaar
  • Black Book Magazine
  • New York Times
  • British Times
  • Vogue Bambini
  • Stern
  • Esquire
  • Geil Magazine.
